September 21, 2020

With TikTok facing scrutiny on data privacy and with the recent U.S. app store ban announcement, Triller has soared to the top of the app stores charts. At a time when content creators have eyes on the alternatives, Triller is doing its best to position itself as a key player in the video-led social applications space. In August, Triller announced that it ranked #1 in all categories in the app store in 50 countries, including the U.S., Australia, France, the U.K., Italy, and almost every major country in which it is available.

Ranked ahead of Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat and every other app, this breakthrough has allowed Triller build off its recent growth following TikTok’s ban in India, and the U.S.’ serious concerns surrounding TikTok’s use of user data. Triller recently launched a new set of filters, camera tools and editing technology. Additionally, it announced the acquisition of Halogen, a go live app, which it is rolling out shortly with a full monetization feature.

In addition to securing the pole position on the iOS app store and Android’s Google Play Store, Triller said downloads for its video app have grown by 20 times over the last several weeks — totaling to about 250 million across the world. It now sits above popular services such as Snapchat and TikTok itself in a number of countries such as the United States, India, France, and more. Triller, which has 50 million monthly active users as of July 2, has released new features and secured content exclusive deals with celebrities, such as the forthcoming Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. boxing match.

Owned by Ryan Kavanaugh and Bobby Sarnevesht’s Proxima, the company is looking to take the next step as a go-to platform for content creators. According to an article from Yahoo Finance, Triller put its horse in the race to acquire TikTok’s U.S data and operations. Joining Microsoft Corp. and Oracle Corp. in the bidding war, Sarnevesht says that the short-video app had made a $20 billion offer with investment firm Centricus Asset Management Ltd for the assets of its rival that China’s ByteDance is seeking to a divest.
